The custom of carrying Kanwar started in the Treta Yuga – the silver age of Hindu mythology. Lord Rama had carried the holy ganges water from Sultanganj in a kanwar and offered to Lord Shiva at Babadham.
Shravani Mela starts in every month of Sawan (Hindi Month). More then 50 lakhs devotees come Sultanganj for take Holy water of Ganga River. After taking Holy water of Ganga River they go to Baidyanath Dham (Deoghar) by on foot in full month of Sawan . The total distance from Sultanganj to Baidynath Dham is 105 km. by old way and 90 km from new shortcut way . Some devotees runs non stop to Deoghar from Sultanganj and they reach Babadham (Baidyanath Dham) in less then 24 hrs.
The person who goes Babadham (Deoghar) from Sultanganj on foot they called general Kanwariya. They reached Babadham in 3-4 days. The person who started non stop on foot journey from Sultanganj to Babadham for 110 km they called ‘Dak – Bam’. There are special facility in Babadham temple for Dak Bam for worship of Lord Shankar at Deoghar.
There are many Dharmshala , hotels and camps in way of Sultanganj to Babadham in which any Kanwariya may stop there for rest. There are thousand restaurants at all way of Sultanganj to Babadham for only vegetarian and non- onion food.
This is true that who goes Babadham as a Kanwariya in once in their life they gets all success in whole life what they wants. So , must go Babadham from Sultanganj in Shravana month in once in your life.

You can stay in free in many big camps of NGO and charitable institutes. All way of Kanwariya Path is full of shop of restaurants, shops, medicine, tea stall, etc.
